Dr Shaver performed cataract surgery on my mother who's 76 years old. It was a horrible experience, to put it mildly. The cataract surgery was unsuccessful, but almost more importantly, he was incredibly rude, abrasive and dishonest. She left her last appointment in tears. I highly recommend you seek alternative Ophthalmologists, or at least ask other patients about their own experience. Further, Dr Shaver is one of those people that are fanatical about masks and boosters. It's often symbolic of someone who has other mental issues going on.

I have seen several opthamologists since I was very young to monitor my high myopia and screen for glaucoma. To be fair, I have only been to dr. Shavers office twice: for the initial appointment and again for my detailed assessment and was deeply disappointed, not to mention stressed, after the appointment. I could tell the first person who took my pressure was nervous which is ok but they made me more anxious as they literally stuck the device on my eye and tapped. For the one eye, they tapped it three times. Im pretty sure you only need to do it once to get a reading. Later on I heard a conversation between that assistant with another where the second assistant asks them why they took a reading three times of my eye implying that it was unnecessary. Whether or not they did it incorrectly, it was very disheartening to clearly hear this conversation while I waited to be seen by the doctor. The second assistant I saw could not get the images of my eyes bc she was also new (according to Shaver) and didn't know how to properly use the machine. That doesn't bother me too much but...strike 2. As I sat waiting, I could hear clear conversations. I could hear them talking about my high eye pressure (which doctor never addressed with me except to say that it's hard to get a proper number...) I learned that the assistants to Dr. Shaver are new. Fine. But then Dr. Shaver comes in without saying a proper hello, sits down and starts making light of the fact that the office doesn't see many patients like me (i have abnormally high myopia) so the assistants didn't know what to do, blaming them. I found him generally unprofessional and he sort of blamed his assistants as one was in the room with me. All in all, it was a bad experience. I am sensitive about my eye health and the fact that this place doesn't have well trained professionals plus Dr. Shaver's attitude...I wont come back. I left feeling anxious and at the same time felt like my time was wasted. My last opthamologist was caring and spent so much time to make sure she had everything right, her assistants were swift and every time I came in, it was just routine. I hope this office gets their ---- together. The assistants were very nice and polite, just new.

The stars are for the staff at his office and the medical staff at comox hospital where the procedure is done are just fantastic.. greeted me, made me feel safe, comfortable and like I was taken care of professionally. So you would think the doctor who is going to cut into your eye would try to make you feel comfortable and safe also, but there is not even a hello, no greeting at all. Without warning he instilled stinging drops into my eyes, he then taped my head down to the table, again no warning, just a sharp ripping sound of tape as he pulls it up and over your forehead. Before you know it you’re tightly taped down, he swabs your eye with a long cotton swab, the whole time you feel as tho he doesn’t like you, this doctor makes you feel like he is angry at you, and all you’ve done is come in and given him your business . You’re in a vulnerable position, you’re nervous and a bit scared you’d really like some reassurance, just a word, as he is going to cut your eye any second, but he’s not saying a thing, his actions are curt and he’s uncommunicative. And it’s not that this doctor wasn’t communicating with anyone, he was laughing and joking with the staff about the things they did on the weekend… I’ve had many procedures over the years with many surgeries, and never have I been treated like this. When he was finished, he rips the tape off my forehead and sat me up. He walked out of the room and as I was being wheeled out I thought maybe he’s say goodbye? So I said “thank you” hoping he would acknowledge me and say oh you’re welcome, but he just turned the other way. When I had follow up appts I was dreading it , I was so nervous ..I didn’t have to see him tho just the support staff, if I did tho I was prepared to tell him how he made me feel -

Dr Shaver performed two cataract surgeries for me. My eyes are improved incredibly - I paid for the up graded lenses. Everything is now lighter, brighter, and clearer. All office visits, tests, surgeries, and checkups were performed in a friendly, professional manner.
