Dr Shaver and his office staff are GREAT!! I feel completely confident in his care. He has a dry sense of humour which I know many people have difficulty understanding. A number of reviews are negative saying he is rude and unfriendly. They should be thinking about the responsibility he has, the information he's having to process all the time and realize that not everyone is warm and fuzzy. He's very capable and conscientious.... that's what is important. And, I find him very friendly, not in a big talkative way, but in a quiet, person of few words way.
So, if you want good eye care and don't care about friendly chatter every time you're there, I highly recommend Dr. Shaver.

Last week I had my yearly appointment with Dr. Heather O’Donnell. She was not there. She had a family tragedy. Her locum was Dr. Shaver, this, nasty, bullying, crotchety old man. He mostly talked only to his assistant. He snapped at me. He snarled at me. He glanced at my list of medications and withdrew in horror. I take these meds because I need to, not because I want to.
I was wearing first time hearing aids that I was just learning to use. He lied to me saying that I couldn’t see because my glasses were not aligned properly. I went to the optician. My glasses had no problems. Dr. Shaver told his assistant that I had dry eyes. He had her practically throw a bottle of eye drops at me, the same brand that I already use twice a day.
He said that I could see perfectly. He was too stupid to see my scarred cornea and floater I didn’t talk to him. Shame on this incompetent, pompous, rude, nasty piece of work. I would never let him operate on my eyes. I would not let him cut my toenails. I have no idea what he thinks I did to him. Many of his patients had similar behaviour from him. Why is he allowed to practise ophthalmology? I phoned Dr. O’Donnell’s receptionist to get his name. I found him, though his photos must have been taken 30 years ago. Most of his reviews are deplorable, describing his behaviour that I was subjected to.

Dr Shaver and the whole team are extremely friendly, professional and informative! I was worried from some of the negative reviews but I was pleasantly surprised with both of my visits and felt very taken care of! I recommend you disregard any of the negative reviews :)

I read about Dr Shaver being a highly qualified surgeon, During a recent cataract surgery, I never had the pleasure of seeing or hearing the man, no good morning how are you, NOTHING. As for the op, I felt as if I was on a conveyer belt system, If I were to know the results of the surgery before hand I would never have had it done.
I am going for a second opinion which I had to fight tooth and.nail NOT to see Shaver but somebody else. Here is holding thumbs.

I was warned that Dr. Shaver was a brilliant surgeon but there would be no “warm & fuzzy.” I was okay with that. He did both of my cataract surgeries & what an amazing difference. His office staff were professional & knowledgeable & the staff at Comox hospital were amazing. They put me completely at ease.
