Our family has been part of the capieira community for 9 years now. My daughter started when she was 7 and is now beginning to teach at 16. I was swept into the energy of it after a couple of years and now we train and dance together. We love the combination of martial art, music, dance and culture in Capoeira. It is wonderful to be able to do an activity together as a mom and teen. Capoeira is so much more than an activity, it is a community and a family.

I tried a Capoeira workshop at a festival a few years back and was always attracted to it. When I saw Axe Capoeira Comox I knew I needed to give it a try. Professora Onça was always encouraging for me to come to class and when I finally did I was lucky enough that my first class was with mestre Cocoroca and immediately felt the carisma, rhythm and joy of the community, specially as a beginner. Everytime I get back home after capoeira my heart feels full! It’s a martial art but with latino flare and lots of smiles. Capoeira is fantastic because it challenges you in every realm: you develop strength, flexibility, speed, grace, calmness, ease and flow. It’s like dance improv but with kicks. Professora Onça is a great teacher, I have much respect for her and appreciate all the lessons and encouragement. I know I’ll stick around for years. Don’t hesitate, just give it a try!

My name is Dr. Heather Matheson. I am the owner and attending veterinarian of Balanced Paws Veterinary Care.
I have been a part of Axe Capoeira for almost 2 years now and it has been an overwhelmingly positive experience, capoeira has provided a common ground and a way for my daughter and I to connect (me 57 and her 13) The multicultural experience has been fantastic, learning to speak and sing in Portuguese
Playing the 4 instruments involved in the Rhoda has been an ongoing challenge but just so fun and uplifting. The co-ordination and physical fitness needed has played a huge roll in developing my daughters confidence in the past year. Not to mention keeping her old mom moving
With Alicia and Axe capoeira we have found a positive, family oriented all inclusive community
Anyone wanting to improve their health, fitness, social inclusion, quality of life and just smile a whole bunch more would benefit greatly😊

I was first introduced to Capoeira at a Batizado in Victoria.
My nephews we’re practicing under Mestrando Testa. I happened to be visiting from PEI and was invited to watch.
I had no idea what to expect. It was the most beautiful presentation I’ve ever experienced. Not only a feast for the eyes but ears and soul. It stayed with me.
I’m now 52 and finally living in an area where I am able to join Capoeira.
I started in January and my journey has been one filled with support and surprises as my uncoordinated body is learning to flow a little smoother and moves start to come together.
The Capoeira community is welcoming, accepting and encouraging. It has been wonderful to learn with a variety of ages and experience levels.

Capoeira has changed my life!
My daughter joined a year ago I followed 8 months ago and now my wife has joined. I’ve lost weight gained strength flexibility and endurance. It is hard to put into words how the combination of a martial art with music, rhythm, culture and language have given us confidence, physical mental and spiritual well being. I am so proud of the progress and self confidence my daughter has gained and at 50 I feel at least 10 years younger. There are so many great lessons for life wrapped up in this sport. It teaches kids(and adults) how to get along, face adversity and challenges while maintaining a healthy mind and body. The lessons and learning never stop. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
